Ink and coating formulation are a complex mix of science and art.  Inkjet inks require design for printing, design for shelf life and design for performance on the printed substrate.  These demands often conflict with one another making formulation challenging.  Resin binder dispersions have enabled low viscosity inks to be jettable and yet after printing, drying and curing and provide high durability, wash fastness and abrasion resistance.  Nanoparticle pigment dispersions provide vivid colors, approaching those of dyes and yet are highly jettable.  Interactions between resin and pigment dispersions need to be carefully managed for stable ink shelf life and long printhead operation.
